Buildings & Grounds Key ideas
An investigation into improving the school environment is a session by session plan (with resources) of how pupils could use the school grounds to investigate and then design a school for the future.
For an assembly idea - Go to www.teachernet.gov.uk/sustainableschools/ enter 'A sustainable school estate' into the search box to find a number of assembly ideas on the issue of sustainable development. Number 6 is about buildings and grounds.
There are 3 ready-made project ideas available to download at www.buildingconnections.co.uk that could be easily modified and delivered over a number of sessions.
'Sustainable Housing' involves researching housing around the world, collecting data about what parents expect from a house and examining sustainability solutions. It could easily be adapted to include a design a house activity at the end.
'Expressive Model Buildings' looks at different types of buildings and building materials. Pupils then produce their own model of a building.
'The Quadrangle Project' was carried out by a school wanting to redevelop an outside space. Pupils examined how the area was and could be used before producing a plan.
