School Travel Plans

A School Travel Plan contains a package of measures intended to reduce car dependency and improve safety. It is based on consultation with teachers, parents, pupils and governors and other local people. A joint initiative between the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Transport has made funding available to promote sustainable, safe and healthy travel to and from school. This includes reducing the number of cars around the school entrance and increasing the proportion of children walking, cycling or using the bus to get to school.
For primary schools £3750 is available, whilst secondary and special schools can claim £5000. In addition to this, an extra £5 per pupil is available for all schools. This funding can be claimed upon successful submission of a completed and signed-off School Travel Plan. It can be spent on capital items within the school grounds which will encourage walking, cycling or bus use, such as a pedestrian shelter, cycle storage or a bus turning circle.
The Highways directorate at North Yorkshire County Council is determined to take full advantage of this opportunity. We have employed a team of school travel experts to assist you, all of whom are experienced teachers. We have also produced a range of resources which will guide you through the process of creating your Travel Plan. We hope you find these resources useful and look forward to working with you.
The deadline for submission of School Travel Plans to North Yorkshire County Council is Friday 9th February 2007. This is in order for the plan to be submitted for funding in 2007, which is the last round of guaranteed funding.
(Please note, Independent schools are not eligible for this funding, although they can benefit from the process of undertaking a travel plan)
